Night Ride with Wildlife

So I went on a great night ride tonight. 12 miles with some fun ascents and descents. A couple of things to note…

Helipad.jpg

My light. I moved the Dinotte up onto my helmet and PERFECT, it works great. I may try to mount my headlamp onto the handlebar, but I don’t think it will help much and may actually be a distraction. The dinotte is bright enough that you can see everything. If you ride like you should, and you look ahead a little way, the light is bright enough to illuminate ahead of you where you’re looking and below that where you’re bike is meeting the trail. The one minor negative thing is that being on your head, it washes out the trail somewhat. Some of the nuances of the trail can’t be seen. When mounted on the handlebar you get a little better depth. Overall though, much, much better on the helmet.

Wildlife on the trail. So I was pretty disappointed with not see much wildlife tonight. I kept hoping for a coyote, rattlesnake, scorpion, something! I stopped twice for what looked like a small scorpion and it turned out to be one of those spiders that try to look like one. I saw two lethargic (or brave) jackrabbits that didn’t go anywhere as I barreled towards them. I could hear a lot of birds around, but only when I stopped (I actually thought for a long time that I could hear them when I was riding, but then I realized that it was my front shock making a faint noise that sounded like a bird). =)… I also saw this huge black spider that looked like a mongo black widow but wasn’t. Nothing exciting… until I was heading home and got to this point .

I came upon a herd of javelina! As you can see by my Garmin trail I was moving around in this area trying to get a picture on my cell phone of one. There were about 6 or 7 of them on both sides of me. When I first came down into the wash I heard something big and wasn’t sure if it was coming at me or away from me. I made sure I could use my bike as a shield =). Then I heard one on the other side of me. They weren’t running away, just kind of circling around me to stay out of my way. I got pretty close to a few of them, but not close enough to illuminate one sufficiently that my cell phone camera could get a good picture of one. I tried to get in for a closer shot, but they were pretty good at avoiding me. Boy, did they stink. Anyway, after a few minutes of trying to get a shot, I gave up. Right about that time, one of the bigger ones came up on the ridge right in front of me and sort of, well, barked at me. It wasn’t really a grunt, and not a bark like a dog, but sort of a mix of the two. Anyway, he obviously wasn’t very happy with me.

It made for the a cool experience since I’ve never seen one except at the zoo.
